Study: Aspirin may help treat some colon cancers

NEW YORK (AP) ? Aspirin, one of the world's oldest and cheapest drugs, has shown remarkable promise in treating colon cancer in people with mutations in a gene that's thought to play a role in the disease.

Among patients with the mutations, those who regularly took aspirin lived longer than those who didn't, a major study found. Five years after their cancers were diagnosed, 97 percent of the aspirin users were still alive versus 74 percent of those not taking the drug.

Aspirin seemed to make no difference in patients who did not have the mutations.

This sort of study can't prove that aspirin caused the better survival, and doctors say more research must confirm the findings before aspirin can be recommended more widely. The study wasn't designed to test aspirin; people were taking it on their own for various reasons.

Still, the results suggest that this simple medicine might be the cheapest gene-targeting therapy ever found for cancer. About one-sixth of all colon cancer patients have the mutated gene and might be helped by aspirin. And aspirin costs just pennies a day.

"It's exciting to think that something that's already in the medicine cabinet may really have an important effect" beyond relieving pain and helping to prevent heart attacks, said Dr. Andrew Chan of Massachusetts General Hospital. He and others from Harvard Medical School led the study, which appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Cancers of the colon or rectum are a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. More than 140,000 new cases and 51,000 deaths from them are expected this year in the United States.

Several studies suggest that aspirin may help fight cancer, especially colorectal tumors. It is often recommended for people who have colon cancer and others at high risk of developing it. But it's not advised for wider use, or for cancer prevention, because it can cause serious bleeding in the stomach and gut.

What has been lacking, doctors say, is a good way to tell which people might benefit the most, so aspirin's risks would be justified. Chan's study suggests a way to do that.

It involved 964 people diagnosed with various stages of colon cancer who were among nearly 175,000 participants in two health studies based at Harvard that began in the 1980s. Every two years, they filled out surveys on their health habits, including aspirin use.

Most had surgery for their cancer, and many also had chemotherapy. They gave tumor tissue samples that could be tested for gene activity. Researchers focused on one gene, PIK3CA, that is involved in a key pathway that fuels cancer's growth and spread. Aspirin seems to blunt that pathway, so the scientists looked at its use in relation to the gene.

In those whose tumors had a mutation in that gene, regular aspirin use cut the risk of dying of colon cancer by 82 percent and of dying of any cause by 46 percent during the study period of about 13 years.

Only two of the 62 regular aspirin users whose tumors had the mutated gene died within five years of their cancer diagnosis versus 23 of 90 non-aspirin users with such a mutation.

The results are "quite exciting," said Dr. Boris Pasche, a cancer specialist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who wrote an editorial that appears with the study in the medical journal. Half a dozen drugs are used to treat colon cancer, but only one meaningfully extends survival in people whose cancers have not widely spread, he said.

"Now we may have aspirin. That's why it's a big deal," Pasche said.

In the study, the dose of aspirin ? baby or regular ? didn't seem to matter, just whether any aspirin was regularly used.

The test for the gene is not expensive and is simple enough that most cancer centers should be able to do it, Chan and Pasche said.

The National Institutes of Health and several foundations paid for the study. One of the 17 authors consults for Bayer, a leading aspirin maker. Pasche has been a paid speaker for two companies that make cancer treatments and has two patent applications under review related to cancer treatment.

Researchers warn that aspirin may not be responsible for the improved survival seen in this study. Differences in how the patients' cancer was treated could have played a role.

For that reason, they say the next step should be a study where some people with the mutated gene are given aspirin and others are not, so their cancer outcomes can be compared more directly.

One colon cancer patient, L. Stewart Keefe, 60, a retired interior decorator and painter from Alton, N.H., decided several years ago to try it.

"I figured, what have I got to lose by taking some aspirin? It just seems like it was a simple enough thing to take," she said. "For me the bleeding risk is a very small possible consequence" compared with the risk of cancer coming back, she said.

Yeshiva University News ? Nobel Prizes in a Nutshell

Given Six Minutes Each, Six Professors Explain Six Nobel Prizes

Explaining the Nobel Prize-winning research of two physicists to Yeshiva University students on October 19, Dr. Gabriel Cwilich, associate professor of physics and division coordinator of natural and mathematical sciences at Yeshiva College, said, ?There is more than one way to skin a quantum cat.?

James Kahn explains the Nobel Prize-winning economic research of?Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley at the annual?Nobel Prize Nanosecond Party.

Speaking at the annual YU Nobel Prize Nanosecond Party, Cwilich was referring to the research of Serge Haroche and David J. Wineland, who were jointly awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems. The event, organized by Dr. Neer Asherie, associate professor of physics and biology, gives six professors six minutes each to present the work of Nobel laureates in their field to students.

?I wanted to give students, staff and faculty an informative and entertaining introduction to Nobel prize-winning work,? said Asherie. ?The format was designed to encourage people with different backgrounds to attend. While a student may be not be eager to listen to an hour-long talk in a field he knows little about, his curiosity might be sufficiently piqued to come to a Nanosecond Party.?

In areas that included chemistry, medicine, economics, literature and peace, professors summarized revolutionary research and forecasted its impact on the future, whether that meant the eventual invention of quantum computers, new treatment options for patients with liver or heart disease or the globalization of culture.

?This year?s prize raises the question, what is the intersection between art and politics?? said Dr. Gillian Steinberg, associate professor of English, who spoke about the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to Chinese author Mo Yan. She noted that most responses to the award focused on Mo?s political background and the ramifications of granting China a coveted prize in the humanities, rather than his writing, which weaves social commentary and magical realism into modern Chinese fiction.

?It?s an interesting direction for literature to be taken because we like to think of literature as a pure art form that doesn?t get dragged down by the sordid realities of the world,? said Steinberg. ?I think the discussion around Mo Yan?s prize underscores how untrue that assumption is.?

Other presenters at the Nanosecond Party included Dr. Daniel Lim, assistant professor of chemistry, on the work of chemistry prize-winners Robert J. Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka; Dr. Yaakov Peter, assistant professor of biology, on the work of Sir John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka in physiology or medicine; Dr. James Kahn, Henry and Bertha Kressel University Professor of Economics and chair of the economics department, on prize winners Alvin E. Roth and Lloyd S. Shapley in economic sciences; and Dr. Linda Brown, assistant professor of philosophy, on the Peace Prize, which was awarded to the European Union.

The event was co-sponsored by the Chemistry Club, Physics Club, Pre-Medical Society, Biology Major Boards, Undergraduate Student Research Presentations, Yeshiva College Student Association and the National Science Foundation.

(AP) ? Bobby Brown has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving for the second time this year.

Los Angeles police spokeswoman Venus Hall says the singer's car was stopped in the Topanga area at around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say he was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence at the Van Nuys jail but was later released.

A representative for Brown could not immediately be contacted.

The 43-year-old pleaded no contest to DUI earlier this year following a March arrest in Los Angeles. Under a plea agreement, Brown checked himself into a rehabilitation center in August.

Brown's first album in 14 years came out this summer.

X-37B Launch: Military's Secret Space Plane Mission Now Set To ...

By: Leonard David
Published: 10/21/2012 12:11 PM EDT on SPACE.com

The U.S. Air Force's launch of the next secret mission by its unmanned X-37B space plane has been officially delayed to mid-November.

The upcoming X -37B space plane mystery mission, also known as Orbital Test Vehicle-3 (OTV-3), was slated to blast off atop an Atlas 5 rocket on Oct. 25 from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The liftoff is now scheduled for Nov. 13, according to ULA.

The delay was announced Saturday (Oct. 20) in an update by the mission's launch provider, United Launch Alliance (ULA). ULA officials said an engine glitch during an Oct. 5 launch of a Delta 4 rocket that successfully orbited a Global Positioning System 2F-3 satellite.

An unexpected lower than normal chamber pressure was observed on the booster?s RL10 upper stage engine. The onboard inertial guidance and flight control systems compensated for the lower thrust, with the Delta second stage placing the spacecraft into the proper orbit.

Accident investigation board

While the Atlas 5 being readied to hurl the OTV-3 into Earth orbit utilizes a different model of the Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RL-10 engine, both the Air Force and ULA concurred on the launch postponement.

Air Force Space Command Commander, General William Shelton, asked for a discretionary accident investigation board (AIB) to investigate why the Delta 4 RL-10B-2 upper stage engine did not perform as expected. Per standard processes, the Air Force reviews all flight data to determine readiness to proceed with the next liftoff.

The space plane delay will allow an additional two weeks for an AIB to probe why the upper stage engine did not perform as expected and enable a "thorough crossover assessment" for the OTV-3 Atlas 5 501 booster to be certified for launch, ULA stated. [Photos: The X-37B Space Plane Unmasked]

Formed in December 2006, ULA is a 50-50 joint venture owned by Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company. ULA provides the expendable Atlas and Delta boosters for U.S. government launch customers including the Department of Defense, NASA, the National Reconnaissance Office and other organizations.

Reusable space test platform

When the OTV-3 mission lifts off, it will mark the 34th Atlas 5 rocket launch since its inaugural launch in 2002. Atlas 5 vehicles also launched the OTV-1 AND OTV-2 missions.

This third mission of the winged X-37B spacecraft also marks the first re-flight of the reusable space plane. The same vehicle flew the first flight in 2010. That maiden journey of the unpiloted space plane lasted 225 days, zooming in on autopilot over the Pacific Ocean and gliding down onto a specially prepared runway at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Similarly, a second X-37B spacecraft flew on the OTV-2 mission, making a touchdown at Vandenberg?on June 16 of this year. The second mission remained in orbit for 469 days, more than doubling the 225-day mission of its sister ship.

The two space planes are built by Boeing Government Space Systems. They are each 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed.

Classified payloads

Exactly what payloads have been, and will be, flown inside the space plane?s cargo bay is classified.

Flights of the X-37B are conducted under the auspices of the Air Force?s Rapid Capabilities Office which has a mission of expediting the development and fielding of select Department of Defense combat support and weapon systems by leveraging defense-wide technology development efforts and existing operational capabilities.

According to an Air Force factsheet, the Rapid Capabilities Office is working on the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle ?to demonstrate a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the United States Air Force.?

There has been discussion of landing the X-37B space plane on the space shuttle runway at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. However, it?s early in the process for those considerations, USAF Major Tracy Bunko at the Pentagon?s Air Force Press desk told SPACE.com.

Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is a winner of last year's National Space Club Press Award and a past editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines. He has written for SPACE.com since 1999.

Some student veterans fighting to stay on GI Bill

courtesy of Hayleigh Perez

Hayleigh Perez, a former Army sergeant who served in Iraq, argues that the University of North Carolina system has over-billed by her $4,600 that should have been covered, she contends, by the GI Bill. She is holding her daughter Caleigh.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

Some 250,000 student veterans are being forced to pay $10,000 for tuition each academic year because many colleges are misclassifying the residency status of those veterans ??often for the schools? own financial gain ??according to a student veterans organization.

The issue centers on a fundamental change to the GI Bill, enacted last year by Congress, which stripped tuition benefits for veterans who attend public schools and who are categorized as out-of-state students. In-state student veterans enrolled at public institutions remain eligible for full tuition coverage under federal law.?

But the financial fallout of the residency crunch is impacting student veterans in about 38 states, including Florida, North Carolina and California, reports the Student Veterans Advocacy Group?(SVAG). Many of those same student veterans are lifelong residents of the states in which they?re now enrolled ? even owning homes in those states???but their schools stamped them as out-of-state residents after they were temporarily transferred to other military bases, or deployed overseas.

?Many veterans are having to quit school because they can?t afford that $5,000 per semester they have to now pay out of pocket,? said Jason Thigpen, founder and president of SVAG, which is based in North Carolina. Thigpen, a student at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, is not personally affected by the classification problems. As a U.S. Army sergeant, he earned a Purple Heart medal for combat wounds he sustained in Iraq in 2009.

?This is the first time in the history of the GI Bill that we can?t get the education that we were promised,? Thigpen said. ?It?s a debt that?s owed to these services members. Our veterans are just asking what was promised to them ? no more, no less.?

Dozens of student veterans, who recently used SVAG to successfully appeal and overturn their out-of-state residency classifications at their colleges, used utility bills and mortgage papers to prove that they are???and have been???living in their home states, Thigpen said.

Despite a similar pile of residency proof, however, student veteran Hayleigh Perez, 26, has failed during several hearings to convince the University of North Carolina that she was fully eligible for GI Bill tuition benefits when she attended UNC Pembroke last spring.

Perez, who was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., in 2006, legally maintained her residence in Fayetteville, N.C., during a subsequent 15-month deployment to Iraq, she said. When she returned to North Carolina, she got married in that state. In 2008, Perez and her husband bought a home in Hoke County, N.C. and she registered as a voter. In 2009, the U.S. military relocated Perez and her husband to Texas, but the couple continued to pay property taxes on their North Carolina home, she said.

Perez received an honorable discharge from the Army in 2009. Last spring, after her husband was transferred back to North Carolina, Perez enrolled at UNC Pembroke. She was stunned, however, when the school billed her $4,600 for a semester of tuition because she?d been deemed an out-of-state resident ? and, thus, ineligible for the GI Bill.

?It is disgraceful,? Perez said. ?I was forced to borrow the money for my tuition from family members.?

She filed a grievance with UNC Pembroke, offering as evidence of her residency the property records, her marriage license and her North Carolina voter ID. The school denied her appeal, she said. She ultimately took her case to UNC leaders in Chapel Hill ? and met with UNC officials yet again last Tuesday with Thigpen at her side. Once more, she said, her claim was denied.

NBC News asked UNC to address Perez?s assertion that she should be classified by the school system as an in-state resident. Laura B. Fjeld, a UNC vice president and general counsel, e-mailed a response:??We are not at liberty to offer any details in connection with the case of Ms. Perez because of the privacy protections afforded her under FERPA (the U.S. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).?

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, there are about 5,000 additional student veterans like Perez who are wrongly classified by their colleges as out-of-state residents ? and many of those take classes within the UNC system, Thigpen contends. He has personally represented 32 of those students during their hearings to overturn their residency classifications, winning each case, he said.?

courtesy of Hayleigh Perez

Student veteran Hayleigh Perez now attends Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. Since spring, she's battled the University of North Carolina to reimburse her for $4,600 in tuition she argues she never should have paid under the GI Bill.

On that point, Fjeld responded: ?We believe that the (North Carolina) State Residency Manual which governs classification of residency for tuition purposes,?is consistent with state and federal law.?

?This isn?t just North Carolina, though,? Perez said. ?This has become an issue nationally. People are serving multiple deployments, and to face these kinds of hardships when they get home is crazy.?

Perez knows well the scope of the issue. She posted an online petition?at change.org, asking the ?UNC Board of Governors? to ?Stop Discriminating Against Student Veterans.? Within the petition, she also revealed her situation, point by point. As of Monday evening, more than 143,000 supporters had signed the petition???including people who said they are student veterans experiencing the same residency problems???and tuition bills???in Virginia, Florida and other states.

Why are some colleges such sticklers on the residency disputes filed by student veterans, forcing many to pay out-of-state tuition fees even though they reside in the same state?

If a public college agrees with a student?s assertion that he or she is an in-state resident and, consequently, allowed to attend school tuition-free on the GI bill, the federal government then directly sends the school that tuition payment???in North Carolina, that?s $5,000, on average, per academic year at public institutions, Thigpen said.

If the school holds fast to its ruling that a student veteran should be classified as an out-of-state enrollee, the student must pay the school out of pocket for tuition???in North Carolina, that?s $16,000, on average, per academic year at public colleges, Thigpen said.

?When you multiply that $11,000 difference over just say 5,000 to 10,000 student veterans who are affected by this,? Thigpen said, ?you?re talking about over $100 million a year.?

Rethinking Bonds In Taxable | The White Coat Investor- Investing ...

For some time those ?in the know? have been recommending that if you have both taxable and tax-protected accounts, that you preferentially place stocks into the taxable account and more tax-inefficient bonds into the tax-protected accounts (like IRAs and 401Ks.)? This makes sense because stocks are inherently more tax-efficient than bonds, since much of their growth is deferred, and even distributed capital gains and dividends are only taxed at the lower tax rate.? I wasn?t initially convinced, so I did the math once, and sure enough, it made sense to put stocks in taxable.? This is actually the main argument I used against using municipal bonds- because most investors are better off using fully taxable bonds in their tax-protected accounts.

Current Market Environment Changes Assumptions

Since I?ve done that math, however, two very significant things have happened in the market.? The most important is that interest rates have come way down.? Less important, but still significant, the spread between municipal bond yields and similarly risky taxable bond yields has narrowed a great deal.? These changes mean that the assumptions plugged into the equations now have to change.? In this case, when you change the assumptions, you also change the conclusions.

TFB Gets It Right

Harry Sit, over at The Finance Buff, recently pointed this out.? His argument was that it?s important to consider the ABSOLUTE tax cost of an investment, not necessarily the RELATIVE tax cost. His example changes the assumptions used in previous calculations.? He asks which should be put in a taxable account first, a stock fund returning 7% taxed at 20%, or a bond fund returning 2% taxed at 40%?? The stock fund loses 1.4% a year to taxed, whereas the bond fund loses 0.8% a year to taxes.? Although the stock fund is relatively more tax-efficient, on an absolute basis, the bond fund is more tax-efficient.? I think he?s absolutely correct.

Forget Putting Your E- Fund Into Tax-Protected

A few years ago investing math nerds were figuring out ways to put their emergency fund into their tax protected accounts (basically when you needed money you?d sell the exact amount of stocks you needed in taxable and buy those same stocks in the tax-protected account so you never had to sell stocks low.)? Now this approach doesn?t make any sense at all, since any investment that is reasonably safe enough to be an emergency fund has a yield of 1% or less.? It?s really all about the expected returns.

Importance of Being Financially Sophisticated

Many investors (and I?m sure I?m somewhat guilty too) simply learn a handful of rules of thumb rather than reading the primary literature from which they come, such as these articles by investment authorities recommending ?stocks in taxable?: Journal of Finance, TIAA-CREF, and Vanguard. ? But if you don?t understand the assumptions and methods used to derive those rules of thumb, you won?t realize when it is time to ditch them.? Lowered expected returns not only affects the ?bonds in taxable? rule, but it also affects other well-known rules such as the 4% withdrawal rule.? Your financial education must be ongoing throughout your life, just like your continuing medical education.

What should you do?

So what should you do now that you?ve realized stocks in taxable is no longer right?? Probably nothing, but it depends.? I won?t be making any changes because nearly my entire portfolio is in tax-protected accounts.? The question is simply irrelevant to my current portfolio, and perhaps yours as well.? If you have no taxable account, you don?t need either stocks or bonds in it.

Even if you do have a taxable account, you still may not want to do anything dramatic, especially if your stocks or stock funds have a low relative cost basis.? They may still be highly tax-efficient if you plan on either dying (your heirs get a step up in basis) or donating the shares to charity (no tax cost) any time soon. Even if you don?t anticipate either of these occurring in the near future, the small advantage in increased tax efficiency each year isn?t worth paying a big tax bill (plus possible fees and commissions) this year in order to reorganize the portfolio.

So if you do want to make this change, it would behoove you to do it gradually, mostly with new money.? The advantage is quite small (1.4% vs 0.8% currently with The Finance Buff?s assumptions), and will shrink as interest rates rise.? It just doesn?t matter as much as it did with higher interest rates.

Don?t worry about getting burned if interest rates rise and you need to switch back.? As The Finance Buff rightly points out, if interest rates rise your bond funds will likely have a capital loss so selling them in taxable isn?t going to hurt your tax situation any (and might even help!)

Muni Bonds Back On The Menu

Since holding bonds in taxable is reasonable again, you?ll need to choose between taxable and municipal bonds.? Most high income professionals who do the calculation (if Taxable yield * (1-marginal tax rate) < Municipal Yield means use munis) will find a municipal bond fund to be a great option.

Asset location matters, but how much it matters (as well as where optimal asset location may be for stocks and bonds) varies with changes in interest rates.

Best Buy offering preorders for Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X for $14999 and $9999 under contract

Nokia and HTC's upcoming Windows Phone 8 flagships are still on the standard release path: announcement, federal approval and now, pre-order. Keeping device availability tucked firmly under its hat, Best Buy is now offering Nokia's Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X for pre-sale, priced at $149.99 and $99.99, respectively. Early buyers have options, too: the Lumia 920 is kitted out in red, blue, yellow, black and white shells. Fashionistas with a flair for purple, however, will need to stick to HTC's hardware. Unfortunately, you don't get that much choice -- Bust Buy's pre-orders don't balk at the devices' AT&T exclusivity. The retailer doesn't say when devices are going to ship, but we imagine early adopters won't have to wait too long.

Beirut bomb sparks protests, fears of Syria war spreading

Hussein Malla / AP

Protesters march on Saturday in the Achrafieh neighborhood a day after a car bomb attack that killed Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan and at least seven others in Beirut, Lebanon.

By NBC News staff and wire

BEIRUT -?Protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks around Lebanon on Saturday in a sign of boiling anger over a massive car bomb that killed a top security official and seven other people a day earlier ? a devastating attack that threatened to spread Syria's civil war to Lebanon.?

In the eastern Bekaa Valley region, the Lebanese army opened fire on a group who were blocking a road to protest the bomb attack, wounding?two people.

"The Lebanese army were trying to open the road and started firing their guns," a witness from the village of Bar Elias, told The Associated Press.

?NBC News producer Paul Nassar reported an unusual calm had swept over Beirut.?

"The city is dead, absolutely quiet," Nassar, reporting from Beirut, said. "All the major shopping districts are closed -- this city would usually be brimming with activity, but now, nothing."

Nassar added that the bomb was an especially devastating blow to the city because it came on the cusp of the major Islam holiday Eid, which starts next weekend.

A Lebanese protester runs behind burning tyres as demonstrators block a road in the southern city of Sidon on Saturday to protest against a bomb blast in the capital Beirut the day before.

"Hotels that were close to capacity are now looking at 20 percent" of rooms full after tourists scrambled to cancel their reservations, Nassar reported.

?

?

Meanwhile, the Lebanese Cabinet held an emergency meeting as the country's opposition called for Prime Minister Najib Mikati to resign. The state-run National News Agency said security commanders would attend the meeting to discuss how to keep the peace.?

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims, who included Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces. Dozens were wounded in Friday's blast in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood.?

Many observers said the attack appeared to have links to the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for 19 months. Al-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.?

Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a campaign of bombings and assassinations to spread sectarian violence in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Also indicted in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.?

Al-Hassan also played a role in the investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri with a massive truck bomb. A U.N.-backed tribunal has indicted four members of militant group Hezbollah, which along with its allies, now holds a majority in Lebanon's Cabinet. Hezbollah denies involvement in Hariri's killing and has refused to extradite the suspects.?

Al-Hassan's department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon over the past few years, Lebanese officials said.?

Lebanon's fractious politics are closely entwined with Syria's. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, often causing events on one side of the border to echo on the other. Lebanon's opposition is an anti-Syrian bloc, while the prime minister and much of the government are pro-Syrian.?

The civil war in Syria has laid bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions as well.?

Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Shiite Hezbollah, the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon.?

Lebanon's top Sunni cleric, Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, condemned the assassination, calling it a "criminal explosion that targets Lebanon and its people." He called for self-restraint saying that "the criminal will get his punishment sooner or later."?

Police and army troops sealed off the site of Friday's blast as military intelligence agents investigated what was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in four years.?

Beirut residents 'need to face this situation. It may be their future'
Sharbal Abdo, a Beirut resident who lives down the block from where the car bomb detonated, on Saturday brought his six-year-old son Chris and 12-year-old daughter Jane to see what happened the day before. They were both at school when the blast ripped through the area.?

"They were very afraid yesterday, and cried a lot late into the night," Abdo said. "Today I decided to bring them here and show what happened. They need to face this situation. It may be their future."?

On Friday, protesters in mostly Sunni areas closed roads with burning tires and rocks in Beirut, the southern city of Sidon, the northern city of Tripoli and several towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley.?

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.?

Rafik Khoury, editor of the independent Al-Anwar daily, said the assassination was an attempt to draw Lebanon into the conflict in Syria, which has been the most serious threat to the Assad family's 40-year dynasty.?

"The side that carried the assassination knows the reactions and dangerous repercussions and is betting that it will happen. Strife is wanted in Lebanon," Khoury wrote.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Has Romney moved to the center on immigration?

Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama spar at the second presidential debate. (Shannon Stapleton/AP)

As Mitt Romney continues to climb in the polls, some campaign watchers are crediting his momentum to a shift to the center on key issues. Former President Bill Clinton even joked about the supposed move last week at a Democratic rally for President Barack Obama in Las Vegas.

"I thought, 'Wow, here's old Moderate Mitt,'" Clinton said, referencing Romney's performance in the first presidential debate, where the former governor of Massachusetts said he was against tax cuts for the wealthy. "'Where ya been, boy?'"

On Thursday, two days after the second presidential debate, the Associated Press chimed in, writing that Romney has moved to the center on a range of issues in a bid to win over on-the-fence voters in swing states. (Just last February, while battling through a hard-fought Republican primary, Romney described himself as a "severely conservative" politician.) And it noted the same areas in which other media outlets and pundits have said the shift is taking place: taxes, women's issues?and immigration.

But there's a hole in the argument: Immigration stakeholders on both the right and left say they have yet to see "Moderate Mitt" appear on this particular issue. In fact, Romney's immigration policies are regarded as some of the most conservative of the last half-dozen presidential cycles.

"If you're someone who favors robust enforcement of U.S. immigration laws, Romney is the best presidential candidate that you've had in decades," Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies told Yahoo News. (The center is a conservative think tank that advocates for reduced legal immigration and an end to illegal immigration.) "I would say that he has generally not etch-a-sketched [on the issue]," Camarota added.

Frank Sharry, the executive director of the liberal immigrant advocacy group America's Voice, tweeted after the second debate that Romney is "the most anti-immigrant candidate ever."

While Romney has shifted slightly away from the days of the primary?when he touted the endorsement of Kris Kobach, who drafted Arizona's law targeting illegal immigrants, and recalled firing "illegals" who had worked in his yard, through a contractor, in Belmont, Mass.?his comments on immigration during the town hall debate differed more in tone than substance.

On Tuesday night, Americans heard the candidates discuss their visions for the country's immigration system for the first time when an undecided voter asked what Romney would do "with immigrants without their green cards that are currently living here as productive members of society."

Romney first responded by slamming President Obama for failing to keep his promise to pass his version of immigration reform, which would have included a path to citizenship for many of the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants. The governor also praised America as a "nation of immigrants" and said he wants to increase high-skilled legal immigration.

But Romney went on to espouse views seen as anathema to earlier Republican presidential candidates, who were eager not to alienate Hispanic voters by seeming unwilling to even consider a path to citizenship.

"There are 4 million people who are waiting in line to get here legally. Those who've come here illegally take their place. So I will not grant amnesty to those who have come here illegally," Romney said, a position he also held in the primary.

The GOP challenger also defended his "self-deportation" policy that he introduced in the primary. It proposes that many of the nation's illegal immigrants will voluntarily leave the country if employers are forced to check immigration status, making mass deportations unnecessary. (At the debate, Obama characterized Romney's self-deportation policy as "making life so miserable on folks that they'll leave.")

The sole point that Romney appeared to drift center-ward on immigration turned out to be a case of misinterpreted wording. Romney said that military service should be "one way" for young illegal immigrants who were brought to the country by their parents to gain legal residency. This suggested that Romney was open to creating more routes to legal residency for these young people, such as attending college.

Such a position would put Romney closer in line with the Democrat-backed Dream Act, which would give citizenship to people under 30 who join the military or attend college, and which Romney has vowed to veto.

But a Romney aide told Yahoo News that the candidate still thinks military service should be the only route to permanent residency.

Romney's decision to stay the course on immigration is an interesting one, as top Republicans?including Romney?have warned that the party is "doomed" if it cannot attract the fast-growing demographic of Hispanic voters, who will make up 9 percent of the electorate this year.

The Romney campaign is betting, then, that his economic message will be more important to this block of voters than its immigration one. Hispanic voters are by no means a homogenous or single-issue group, and polls show that, like most voters, they care most about the economy and jobs, with immigration trailing behind.

But Republican strategists stress that a hostile-sounding tone on immigration issues can alienate many Latino voters, no matter the candidate's economic platform. And a Latino Decisions poll shows that more than half of all Hispanic voters know at least one person who is undocumented, meaning the issue is personal.

The most recent Pew Hispanic Center poll has Romney picking up just 21 percent of the Hispanic vote, compared with 69 percent for Obama. (Romney is polling much better among Latinos in the swing state of Florida, however, where a strong Cuban-American presence tends to boost Republican candidates.)

George W. Bush picked up more than 40 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004, while John McCain slipped to 31 percent in 2008. The downward trend is not good news for the GOP. But some conservatives argue that embracing legalization measures will not necessarily help Republicans reverse the downward slide. The New York Times' Ross Douthat writes that "a party's overall brand matters more than its stance on a single issue", and that embracing restrictionist policies doesn't mean forfeiting the Hispanic vote.

Romney seems willing to break from tradition. Republican President Ronald Reagan signed the first immigration reform bill in 1986, offering legalization to nearly 3 million people in the country. George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and John McCain?as well as their Democratic rivals?all supported legalization measures to some degree either while running for president or in office. Bob Dole, however, ran on a platform in 1996 that would have allowed public schools to deny entrance to children who couldn't prove their citizenship. (Dole voted for Reagan's legalization 10 years earlier.)

Matt Barreto, a pollster with Latino Decisions and a political science professor at the University of Washington, said he thinks Romney's performance in the debate is unlikely to gain him any ground with Latino voters.

"I thought with his answers on immigration he continued to dig himself into a hole," Baretto said. "He had a chance there to perhaps make some overtures." Barreto added that Romney's use of the phrase "undocumented illegals" to refer to young illegal immigrants "certainly isn't going to help him."

Romney ups criticism of Obama's second-term plans

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Heading into the campaign's final weeks, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is upping his criticism of President Barack Obama's plans for a second term, accusing the Democrat of failing to tell Americans what he would do with four more years. The Obama campaign is aggressively disputing the notion, claiming it's Romney who hasn't provided specific details to voters.

At campaign events, in a new ad and fundraising appeal out Saturday, Romney is setting up the closing weeks as a choice between what he says is a "small" campaign that's offering little new policy and his own ambitious plan to fundamentally change America's tax code and entitlement programs.

The new Romney ad criticizes the president's policies on debt, health care, taxes, energy and Medicare, arguing that Obama is simply offering more of the same. The campaign did not say where the spot would air. The fundraising appeal hits Obama for raising taxes and increasing the debt by $5.5 trillion, repeating the lack-of-agenda criticism.

"Although President Obama won't lay out his plan for a second term, we already know what it will be ? a repeat of the last four years. We can't afford four more years of crushing debt and wasteful spending," Romney says in the letter, adding he has a clear plan to put America on a path to prosperity.

Both Obama and Romney retreated from the campaign trail Saturday to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Saturday continued the no-agenda theme against Obama at campaign stops near Pittsburgh and in Belmont, Ohio.

"He's not even telling you what he plans on doing," Ryan told a rain-soaked crowd of about 1,100 people at a campground in coal-rich eastern Ohio.

Obama's campaign disputes the notion that the president hasn't outlined a detailed second-term agenda, pointing to his calls for immigration reform, ending tax breaks for upper income earners, fully implementing his health care overhaul and ending the war in Afghanistan.

In a statement sent after Romney's Friday night event, Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner ticked through a series of policy items, calling them "just part of President Obama's agenda for a second term."

Obama, at the Democratic National Convention, called for creating 1 million manufacturing jobs over the next four years with a mix of corporate tax rate cuts and innovation and training programs. He has set a goal of cutting the growth of college tuition in half over the next 10 years. He also has called for Congress to pass proposals he made last year that include includes tax credits for companies that hire new workers and funding for local municipalities to hire more teachers, police officers and firefighters.

As for why Republicans would back the same proposals they have already voted against, Obama has told supporters he expects his re-election would "break the fever" on Capitol Hill that led to gridlock during his first term.

Vice President Joe Biden made a diagnosis of his own on Saturday, saying Ryan had caught "Romnesia," the word Obama used the day before to describe what he calls Romney's changing polices.

"That man is contagious," Biden said of Romney, to loud cheers at a campaign stop in St. Augustine, Fla. "Congressman Ryan caught it as well."

He said the Wisconsin Congressman is now giving a new explanation for cuts in the budget he oversaw and passed in the House.

The president's aides are particularly irked by the questions about Obama's second-term agenda, because they say it's Romney who has failed to provide voters with details. They point to his refusal to provide specifics about his tax plan or outline what he would replace the president's health care overhaul with if he makes good on his promise to repeal the federal law.

An independent group backing Obama, though, is trying to renew attention on Romney's tenure at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The group, Priorities USA Action, is re-airing an ad about an AMPAD plant in Marion, Ind. That spot features former employee Mike Earnest recalling being told to build a stage from which officials of the office supply company later announced mass layoffs.

He says, "It was like building my own coffin." That ad first aired in battleground states in the summer.

Romney aides have said AMPAD was a struggling business to begin with, and Bain overall created many more jobs than were lost.

That ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. The new campaign will be in addition to a $30 million effort against Romney policy proposals, the group said.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he is huddled with advisers preparing for the debate. Among those with him are White House senior adviser David Plouffe and senior campaign strategist David Axelrod. Aides say Obama was also being assisted by National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and former Obama aide Karen Dunn.

Romney was also with aides preparing for the debate, spending the weekend in Florida.

Both campaigns are heavily targeting Florida and its 29 electoral votes ? the most of any tossup state. It was the second day of a two-day Florida swing for Biden, which overlapped a two-day swing by Ryan. Romney's wife, Ann, was also in Florida Saturday and First Lady Michelle Obama planned a visit Monday, ahead of the presidential debate that night in Boca Raton. The president is planning at least two days of campaigning in Florida after the debate.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News and the candidates will be seated at a table. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.
