Deodorize Your Fridge with a Bowl of Oatmeal

Deodorize Your Fridge with a Bowl of Oatmeal If your fridge smells a little funky, but you don't have any baking soda handy, oatmeal can fill in as a natural alternative.

Oatmeal is great at absorbing oils, but it works just as well for eliminating smells. Just open up a canister of uncooked oatmeal, or pour some in a bowl, and set it in your fridge overnight. By morning, it will have neutralized the offensive odors just like a box of baking soda. Once the oats have done their job, you can even reuse them to clean a cast iron skillet. Be sure to click through the source link to find more clever uses for this humble breakfast food.

FireWife: Guest Post: What You'll Need for that Adorable Baby Shower

As you know, I'm fairly excited about the prospect of possibly having baby #2. Whether you're having a little one yourself, or are planning a shower for a friend, I hope you enjoy this guest post by Rachael McAdams. Happy reading!
*****************************************

Baby showers are full of absolutely adorable things for both mom and baby. Keeping track of everything however, can be tough. Here are a few lists to help stay organized. Themes, Decorations, and Invitations Baby shower decorations should reflect the overall theme of the event. Is mommy planning a ?Noah?s Ark? room? Get pairs of small stuffed animals to put on every table. Does she like to garden? Get small potted plants and packages for seeds for each guest to take home with them as favors, such as these Peter Rabbit personalized seed packets from Esty. Find out what mom and dad are planning for their new addition and try to implement it into the shower?s theme and decorations. Consider asking other family members to join in on the planning and for shower ideas. They may be able to provide that one little bit of information that could make the shower extra special! Once you decide on a theme and what type of decorations you would like to have, you need to order invitations. There are plenty of great options for every budget. For example, Tiny Prints has baby shower invitations to match any theme you can dream up and they usually have a coupon code running. Invitations should go out three to four weeks before the shower so everyone has time to respond and find that perfect gift. Also make sure to include if it the shower is a surprise so no one slips about the plans in front of mommy. Once the theme is picked and the invitations have gone out, it is time to plan a menu, Woman?s Day Magazine has a great list of tasty ideas! First it is important to consider any dietary restrictions mommy may be under. For example, many women need to be extra careful of their sodium intake during pregnancy, so make sure to avoid serving nothing but salty snacks. On the flip side, make sure to include food items mommy will enjoy. Does she love chocolate cake? Or a special recipe of her grandma?s? These are the things that will help make the day extra special with that touch of home. Ultimately, a baby shower is all about having fun and celebrating a wonderful event. Make sure your plans include a fun theme and great food, and everyone will have wonderful memories.

Obama plays 1st golf since automatic budget cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is on his first golf outing since automatic spending cuts known as the sequester went into effect on March 1.

Some conservatives have called on Obama to give up golf since popular public tours of the White House were canceled because of the budget cuts.

The White House has said the tours were canceled to keep Secret Service agents from being furloughed because of the spending reductions.

Critics of the decision to cancel the White House tours also noted that Obama's golf outings require a sizable Secret Service presence for security.

Obama hit the links Saturday on the course at Andrews Air Force Base. The White House said he was playing with his friend, Marty Nesbitt, and two White House aides.

AdvSecret.com Product Creation Tactics That Appeal To ...

In this article we are going to tell you about a pretty basic and simple idea that puts together some different aspects of marketing that don?t usually get a lot of play. You might even think ?there?s nothing exciting about that? when you read them and that?s fine. If you aren?t yet doing them or haven?t thought of them in that way before now, that is entirely something else. Another fantastic point about online marketers as a whole is that they let themselves get way too comfortable when they figure out what works for them. This is a decision you will have to make for yourself when the time comes but really, it?s better to always be on the lookout for ideas and things that you can take advantage of and use reasonably well to help yourself with your marketing.

Although there are many unique approaches out there for finding profitable niche markets, this one will show you how to drill down and find one right away. First of all, you want to focus on newbies in a niche that might be profitable for you. There are so many ways you can find them and market to them. It is very common for experts in a particular niche to not want to be bothered by those that know so little. As long as you can spend some time with these people, and be patient with them, you can help them move in the right direction. What you want to do is offer affiliate products or your own personal product to these newbies to help them out. This usually works very well. If you are looking for sub niches, you should know that these are contained in vast quantities in the larger markets worldwide. The sub niches also have related markets associated with them. Related markets have products based on the needs of each market that work or are used together at some point, or maybe always. By simply choosing the opportune, you can take one of those products and marketed to the consumers that would be willing to buy it. Make sure that the products and markets are related, or else there may be no demand for what you are offering. So in regard to competitive marketing, this is one way that you can start in this lucrative business.

Here is a nice twist on the idea of interviewing experts and it is much easier than going out and finding the experts on your own. You are the expert and can do your own interview (or ask somebody you already know to interview you). This is not so far out as you may think, and remember that so many things in life just depend on how you position yourself, or anything else. This gives you an interview that you can use to sell yourself as an expert. Being interviewed automatically increases the standing other people give you. What you can do is contact a local radio station, even a smaller station, and ask them if they would be interested in interviewing you. You are not the first person to choose this method, lots of people have used it. You?ll spend your time much more wisely if, instead, you spend time working on these marketing techniques. Whether you jump in to each of these methods or ignore all of them?it is really up to you. But think about diversity in your marketing and how it may save your business if things should change.

Declaring a truce with our microbiological frenemies

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Managing bacteria and other microorganisms in the body, rather than just fighting them, may be lead to better health and a stronger immune system, according to a Penn State biologist.

Researchers have historically focused on microbes in the body as primarily pathogens that must be fought, said Eric Harvill, professor of microbiology and infectious disease. However, he said that recent evidence of the complex interaction of the body with microbes suggests a new interpretation of the relationship.

"Now we are beginning to understand that the immune system interacts with far more beneficial bacteria than pathogens," said Harvill. "We need to re-envision what the true immune system really is."

Harvill said that this reinterpretation leads to a more flexible approach to understanding how the immune system interacts with microbes. This approach should balance between defending against pathogens and enlisting the help of beneficial microbes.

While the role that some bacteria play in aiding digestion is better known, microbes assist in improving body functions, including strengthening the immune system and responding to injuries.

In some cases, attacking pathogens can harm the beneficial effects microbes have on immune system, according to Harvill. For example, patients on antibiotics have an increased risk of contracting yeast infections and MRSA.

"Viewing everything currently considered immunity, including both resistance and tolerance, as aspects of a complex microbiome management system that mediates interactions with the sea of microbes that surround us, many of which are beneficial, can provide a much more positive outlook and different valuable perspectives," Harvill said.

The system that includes bacteria and other microbes in the human body, or the microbiome, is much larger and more integrated into human health than most people suspect, according to Harvill.

"The human body has 10 times more bacterial cells than human cells," said Harvill.

Adding to the complexity is the adaptive capacity of the human immune system. The immune system can develop antibodies against certain pathogens, which it can reuse when threatened by future attacks from the same pathogen.

Harvill, who described his alternative viewpoint in the latest issue of mBio, said that some researchers have not yet accepted this broader approach to the immune system.

"Among immunologists or microbiologists this is an alien concept," said Harvill. "It's not part of how we have historically looked at the immune system, but it's a useful viewpoint."

Other researchers who study plant and nonhuman biology are already starting to embrace the concept. For example, plant biologists are beginning to recognize that viruses can help plants resist drought and heat.

"Within nonhuman immunology, this is not an alien concept because they have seen many examples of beneficial relationships between the host and its microbial commensals," Harvill said.

Harvill said adopting this new perspective could be the first step toward new medical treatments.

"This new viewpoint suggests new experiments and results will published," said Harvill. "And, hopefully, the concept becomes more and more mainstream as supporting evidence accumulates."

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences supported this work.

Heat start to move on after streak ends

Take heart, Heat. Look out, NBA.

When the Los Angeles Lakers' 33-game winning streak ended, they hit a bit of a lull before rolling through the playoffs and winning the NBA title.

That scenario likely would suit Miami just fine since the defending champions have said all along they were focused on repeating more than breaking a record.

Dwyane Wade even sounded relieved Miami's run stopped at 27, courtesy of the Chicago Bulls.

"Now that it's over, I'm glad it's over," he said after the 101-97 loss Wednesday night, his team's first defeat in nearly two months.

"It really didn't matter to us," Wade said. "If you get it, it's awesome. If you don't, we still won 27 games in a row. That's pretty awesome. So we really weren't like, 'We've got to get that record.' Not at all."

So, with their name firmly attached to the second-longest streak in NBA history, the Heat did what they would have done if it had still been going strong. They took Thursday off in New Orleans, where they'll face the Hornets on Friday night.

While the circus atmosphere around the team slows down ? until the playoffs, anyway ? the Heat can turn to the business of wrapping up the final 11 games of the regular season without what some may call a "distraction." Clinching the Eastern Conference's No. 1 seed is a foregone conclusion, and the Heat leads San Antonio by two games in the race for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Still, Lakers star Kobe Bryant urged LeBron James and his teammates to savor the moment.

"I think just as a student of the game, as a fan of the game, you appreciate those kind of streaks and you realize how difficult it is to put together that big of a streak," he said. "Obviously, the Lakers winning 33 in a row was phenomenal, but the Heat's one was just as impressive."

After their streak ended, those '71-72 Lakers lost four of their next six games. But they went 15-2 to close the regular season, then lost only three of 15 playoff games on the way to the title.

That's the only measure of success for the Heat.

"At the end of the day, a win is a win in our league," said James, the reigning MVP who averaged exactly 27 points per game during the 27-game streak. "We've gotten better throughout the season. Each and every month we've improved. We've started from behind some games, but for the most part we've played some great basketball."

They blew out some teams and rallied in the final minutes to beat others, erasing double-digit deficits and pulling off 11 fourth-quarter comebacks in their 7?-week run of dominance.

Entering Thursday, 10 NBA teams hadn't won 27 games all season.

"Really proud of the grind of the last few weeks from my guys," Miami forward Shane Battier wrote on Twitter early Thursday. "The focus and effort (and luck) was phenomenal."

They were must-see television, with ESPN and NBA TV scrambling to pick up Heat games as the streak rolled along. ESPN said the overnight rating for Heat-Bulls was the fifth-best of any regular-season game ever shown on the network.

For those who still need streaks to follow, there are plenty of options.

Women's basketball is full of them right now, with Baylor (32), Notre Dame (28) and Delaware (27) all streaking into NCAA regional games this weekend. In men's college basketball, Louisville takes a 12-game winning streak into its Midwest Regional semifinal against Oregon on Friday night. And in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins were trying for a 14th straight win against Winnipeg on Thursday night.

To put it in perspective, Heat's streak not only is the second-longest in NBA history, but the second-longest among any of the four major professional sports.

The longest current NBA streak now belongs to the New York Knicks ? six games.

On Friday, the Heat begin anew.

Miami would need to win every game left on its schedule and sweep all four playoff series to end the year with another 27-game winning streak. Meantime, Wade offered this:

"Now that it's over, let's look back on it as something that was great."

Pennsylvania stadium aims to please fans with urinal video games

By Joe McDonald

(Reuters) - Play doesn't need to stop for sports fans taking a bathroom break at a Pennsylvania minor-league baseball stadium that has installed video games in men's room urinals.

The "hands-free" video game is played by directing oneself right or left in the urinals at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs' Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The game is aimed at increasing prostate health awareness.

The video screens challenge players to steer their way along a snowmobile course, while trying to hit cartoon penguins. They also display messages reminding men to make an appointment for a prostate exam, Schaeffer said.

Names of high scorers deft enough to hit the target mirrored on a 12-inch LCD screen above the urinal will appear on other contestants' urinals and on the video displays in the ballpark.

The "hands free" urinal players can go by their full name, part or their name or a pseudonym when their scores are tallied.

The urinal video games will commence when the baseball games start for the IronPigs, a minor league team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies. The team opens its 2013 season next week with an exhibition game on Tuesday.

The IronPigs bought the restroom entertainment, described as the "world's only truly hands-free urinal game controller," from Captive Media, a company based in the United Kingdom, said IronPigs spokesman Jon Schaeffer.

While the games have been placed in bars in the United Kingdom, their appearance in the Allentown stadium marks a first in the world of sports, said Ed Gundrum, who oversees sales for the company in the U.S.

"They told us with certainty that it's not in any other sports venue in the world," Schaeffer said. The "p-controlled" video games, which were undergoing "calibration" on Wednesday, are in bars in the United Kingdom, Schaeffer said.

The games, part of a marketing agreement with the Lehigh Valley Health Network, are intended to remind men about the importance of prostate health, the baseball team said in a news release.

A List Of Today's Most In-Demand Teaching Jobs

Despite the incredibly demanding workload and the fact that dealing with students' attitudes can be extremely stressful, many still dream of becoming teachers. Everybody has this desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others and among all professions, teaching has the greatest power in fulfilling such a human desire. Teachers are instrumental in moulding character, honing skills and developing potential, and they always hold a very special place in the hearts of their students no matter how long time has passed.

The problem these days with teaching jobs is that finding the right fit is often difficult due to teachers' specialisations. Some positions are easily filled (and competition is always tight) and it takes a while before another opening comes up. To those who have still to determine a subject of specialisation and would like to get a job right away after university, listed below are the most in-demand teaching jobs today.

Special Education or SPED teachers - There are so many SPED institutions these days searching for teaching personnel for their special learners. The job is quite demanding as not only subjects are taught but essential, basic life skills as well; this is because the learners' abilities are more about paying great consideration to their limitations instead of their potentials. With the added responsibilities (and, of course, the usually longer hours of work), not a lot of teachers really want to explore this field of education. The great thing, however, is that most SPED schools are private institutions and compensation for teachers is typically higher.

English as a Second Language or ESL teachers - With emigration increasing every year in the the country, the bilingual population is growing as well. ESL is not only offered in schools but also by the local government for non-traditional learners. ESL teachers usually teach intimate classes with students who have to acquire English as their secondary spoken language. There's also great demand for personal ESL teachers and this arrangement is often more profitable as personal tutors can usually demand a higher rate.

Maths teachers - Perhaps due to the difficulty of all the Math subjects, not a lot of teachers choose to specialise in the different branches of maths, therefore, there's always great demand for them.

Science teachers - More science teachers can always be hired in the mid west. A lot of times, really good science teachers have to come from south east countries where science and technology is considered more advanced than anywhere else.

Teaching jobs from SanzaTeaching.com can help you find occupations that can match your skills. This will help you share more information to your students, giving them vital details on how to make good decisions for their future.

Ex-Sen. Craig loses bid to dismiss FEC lawsuit

(AP) ? A federal judge refused on Thursday to dismiss a Federal Election Commission lawsuit that accuses former Sen. Larry Craig of misusing $217,000 in campaign funds for his legal defense after his arrest in a 2007 airport bathroom sex sting.

Craig had argued that the airport bathroom trip fell under his official duties as senator because he was traveling between Idaho and Washington for work, and therefore the legal fees could be paid for with campaign money.

But U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson rejected that argument. She wrote in her ruling that the charge against Craig didn't relate "to his conduct as a legislator, but only actions undertaken in the privacy and anonymity of a restroom stall." Jackson set a scheduling conference in the case for April 26.

The Idaho Republican was arrested by an undercover police officer at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The officer said Craig tapped his feet and signaled under a stall divider that he wanted sex. Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and paid a fine. After his arrest later became public, Craig tried unsuccessfully to reverse his conviction.

The FEC allows campaign funds to be used for legal expenses that were caused by a candidate's campaign or officeholder's duties, and determines that on a case-by-case basis. The commission sued Craig last year after concluding his legal problems had nothing to do with campaigning for federal office. The FEC is seeking an order requiring Craig to return the money to his campaign, along with fines of up to $6,500 against Craig and his campaign treasurer, Kaye O'Riordan.

"Senator Craig was arrested for, and pled guilty to, committing a criminal violation of Minnesota state law," Jackson wrote. "One does not need to be a United States congressman - or any sort of federal official - to be charged with this offense, and the arrest did not call into question his conduct as a legislator. Neither the charge nor the underlying conduct had anything to do with his performance of his official duties, so the legal expenses they generated were not incurred in connection with those duties."

In an email, Craig's lawyer, Andrew Herman, said, "We will assess the opinion and decide how to proceed after doing so."

North Korea says it has cut key military hotline

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea said Wednesday that it had cut off a key military hotline with South Korea that allows cross border travel to a jointly run industrial complex in the North, a move that ratchets up already high tension and possibly jeopardizes the last major symbol of inter-Korean cooperation.

North Korea recently cut a Red Cross hotline with South Korean and another with the U.S.-led U.N. command at the border between the Koreas, but there's still a hotline linking aviation authorities in the North and South.

North Korea's chief delegate to inter-Korean military made the announcement Wednesday in a statement sent to his South Korean counterpart. The hotline is important because the Koreas use it to communicate as hundreds of workers travel back and forth to the Kaesong industrial complex.

South Korean officials say more than 900 South Korean workers were in Kaesong on Wednesday. There was no immediate word about how cutting the communications link would affect their travel back to South Korea.

North Korea, angry over routine U.S.-South Korean drills and recent U.N. sanctions punishing it for its Feb. 12 nuclear test, has unleashed a torrent of threats recently, including vows to launch a nuclear strike against the United States. It has also repeated its nearly two-decade-old threat to reduce Seoul to a "sea of fire."

Despite the rhetoric, outside weapons analysts have seen no proof that North Korea has mastered the technology needed to build a warhead small enough to mount on a missile.

Still, the cutting of the hotline could be more significant if it affects travel by the workers at Kaesong.

Kaesong is operated in North Korea with South Korean money and know-how and a mostly North Korean workforce. It provides a badly needed flow of hard currency to a country where many face food shortages.

The complex is the only remaining operational symbol of joint inter-Korean cooperation.

In March 2009, North Korea cut off the military hotline with South Korea and kept 80 South Korean workers stranded in Kaesong for a day. The cross-border travel resumed after North Korean authorities approved it through a South Korean office in Kaesong. The military hotline remained cut off for more than a week and was reconnected following the end of annual South Korean-U.S. military drills.

Pope chooses simple residence over regal papal apartment

Max Rossi / Reuters

Pope Francis sprinkles holy water with an aspergillum as a blessing during the Palm Sunday mass at Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican March 24, 2013.

Pope Francis wants to stay for the time being in a simple Vatican residence instead of moving into the spacious and regal papal apartments, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

The former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina is still living in the Domus Santa Martha, a modern hotel-style residence inside the Vatican City where he stayed during the conclave that elected him on March 13.

Although the papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace - which consist of more than a dozen rooms as well as quarters for staff and a terrace - are available, he shows no desire to move in any time soon, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said.

In the past few days Francis has moved out of a single room in the residence, which has some 130 rooms, into a suite so he could have more space to work and to receive people, Lombardi said.

Francis has set a more austere tone for the papacy than his predecessor Benedict XVI, who gained a reputation for sumptuous costumes. Lombardi says the new pope enjoys the residence's community atmosphere where he lives alongside other clergy.

The pope says Mass in its chapel every morning and invites Vatican workers and other guests to attend.

"I can't make long-term predictions, but for now it seems he is experimenting with this type of simple co-habitation," Lombardi said.

"It is still a period of getting used to things, of experimentation. Certainly in this phase he has expressed the desire to stay where he is," he said.

Lombardi said the pope will be using the offices in the Apostolic Palace and its grand, frescoed reception rooms to meet heads of state and delegations, and will continue to appear each Sunday to deliver a blessing from the window of the papal apartments overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Coupon clipping declines as shoppers get savvier

Nati Harnik / AP file

Margery Gibbs uses coupons at a store in Omaha, Neb., in 2009. Coupon use fell in 2012 after several strong years.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

The good, old-fashioned coupon ? which surged in popularity in recent years ? appears to be falling out of favor.

Two separate studies show that coupon use declined significantly in 2012.

One study, from coupon industry consulting firm Inmar, found that about 3 billion coupons were redeemed in 2012, a drop of about 14.3 percent from approximately 3.5 billion coupons redeemed in 2011. Another, from NCH Marketing Services, found that coupon use fell by 17 percent in 2012 over the year before.

The drop came after several good years for the coupon, which seemed to indicate that the weak economy had helped bring coupon clipping back in style. The coupon has even enjoyed its 15 minutes of pop culture fame thanks to the reality show ?Extreme Couponing,? which documents people using thousands of coupons to save hundreds of dollars stockpiling diapers, paper towels and other items.

But experts say that while frugality is still in vogue, many shoppers have gotten so savvy at saving money that they've moved past the coupon.

?It was like the training wheels ? to teach people how to save money,? Phil Lempert, the chief executive of Supermarket Guru, said of coupons.

Experts say it?s pretty common for coupon use to rise when the economy goes south, and start falling as the economy gets better.

But the economic gains in 2012 weren?t really strong enough to warrant people giving up their frugal habits. In addition, experts say they saw plenty of other reasons that coupon use has declined.

?It?s sort of a thousand cuts,? said David Mounts, the chief executive of Inmar. ?It?s little things here and there.?

For starters, there were slightly fewer coupons. The industry distributed about 310 billion coupons in 2012, down from 313 billion in 2011 and a big drop from 336 billion in 2010, according to Inmar?s research.

Last year?s batch of coupons also tended to be for smaller discounts and to expire more quickly than in the past, Mounts said.

In addition, shopping habits have changed.

Some customers have started to want more than a one-size-fits-all coupon that you clip out of a Sunday newspaper, Mounts said.??Instead, more shoppers are looking for personalized deals that more closely match their shopping habits. They also want deals that are delivered digitally so they don?t have to manage a stack of paper.

So far, though, those types of coupons aren?t that widespread. Inmar?s data shows that more than four in 10 coupons still come from the newspaper inserts.

Frugally minded shoppers also are finding even more sophisticated ways to save money, said Lempert of Supermarket Guru, which tracks customer shopping habits.

These days, he?s seeing more savvy shoppers going to multiple stores to find the best prices on food and other items. Their stops may include drugstores, dollar stores, warehouse chains like Costco and specialty grocers such as Trader Joe?s.

They?re also turning more to store brands that may be cheaper than name brands, even when there?s a coupon for the branded item, he said.

Many younger customers also are constantly changing their eating and shopping habits, he said, and may not be as interested in buying the items that are traditionally discounted with coupons. They also may be more captivated by new types of ways to save, such as a four-hour sale promoted on Twitter.

?Frankly, the coupons weren?t meeting their needs,? Lempert said.

The extreme couponing fad may not have helped either.

The trend sparked a backlash among some in the industry, who alleged that the TV show set unrealistic expectations.

Lempert thinks it also made some shoppers feel uneasy. He said he receives thousands of emails a week from shoppers, and reaction to extreme couponing was largely negative.

Despite such challenges, experts say?the coupon industry is adapting to changing customer preferences.?Inmar?s early data from the start of 2013 appears to be showing more positive trends in coupon use than last year, Mounts said, which suggests coupon clipping likely won't disappear completely any time soon.

British Cycling aims to get one million more women on bikes

British Cycling, the national governing body for cycling, revealed plans on Monday to get one million more women cycling regular in the UK by 2020.

BC says that it wants to see more women involved with cycling at 'all levels' including recreational riding, racing and getting involved with organisation, including sitting on its own board. It has identified those areas which are currently an obstacle in enticing women into the saddle and will address each issue.

The strategy - which has been termed 'ambitious' by BC themselves - has the support of?Culture Secretary Maria Miller, Sport England and long-term sponsor Sky.

"At British Cycling, in partnership with Sky and Sport England, we have never been scared of a challenge, nor of setting ambitious targets," said British Cycling president Brian Cookson.

"Whether it is winning eight gold medals at a home Olympics four years after the triumphs of Beijing, producing the first British winner of the Tour de France or getting a million people cycling, when we set ourselves goals, we set about them with seriousness and purpose.

"We are not saying we are going to be perfect, far less that we are perfect now. The direction of travel is important: our ultimate aim is to inspire one million more women to get on bikes and we are determined to make this happen."

The main points of BC's strategy have been outlined by the organisation as follows:

Building on the success of traffic free, mass participation events, Sky Ride, and British Cycling's female led rides, Breeze, to encourage more women to take up recreation cycling with other women, their partners, families and friends;

Continuing to campaign for safer roads for all cyclists to help overcome the safety concerns that 30% of women identify as the main barrier to taking up cycling;

Setting up entry-level racing opportunities for women to compete at key facilities across the country, including establishing ?get into cycle sport' coaching sessions;

Working to influence more event organisers to put on women's events to run alongside men's races;

Establishing a National Youth Form with equal male and female representation to feed into British Cycling's work to inspire young people to take up the sport;

Recruiting more female coaches, volunteers and officials into the sport to ensure more women are influencing and running the sport at the grassroots;

Working to ensure that British Cycling's board is more representative with plans to recruit three Board members as soon as possible;

Embedding our strategy in all of British Cycling's work and outputs including ensuring that our website, membership offer and branding is appealing to women;

Looking at how we can better promote our free expert advice, cycling routes and Social Cycling Groups network to demonstrate how easy it is to get involved.

Progress and success of the strategy will be assessed via BC and Sky's Annual Cycling Survey, which is undertaken on BC and Sky's behalf by GFK NOP and uses a sample of 10,000 adults who complete an online questionnaire.

Last week it was a announced that the final stage of the 2013 Tour of Britain will include a women's race in London, with a five-day regional women's race taking place in 2014.

How to Make and Drink Greek Coffee | Olive Tomato

Greek coffee

We have known for a while that coffee can be good for you and particularly Greek style coffee as that recent study on elderly Greeks showed us. So how do you make it?

Well, first of all taste is subjective and when it comes to coffee the variations are limitless. The same goes for Greek coffee, obviously you won?t add milk or syrups to it, but the ratio of sugar to coffee, the amount of coffee, the length of time it is boiled, whether it has bubbles or not, all these are factors that can affect the taste and texture of the coffee.?So in this post I will show you how I make the coffee and present the numerous other ways it can be prepared.

You will need
You will need some equipment to make a proper Greek coffee.

  • A gas source. In Greece most people used to have gas stove tops, nowadays these have been replaced with electric stove tops, which I am not very fond of, as I cannot see flame. Since most people no longer have gas stove tops, here they use what you call a gazaki, it is a single camping gas burner. Traditionally this type of coffee is made in what is called hovoli, which is basically heated sand.
  • Get a small coffee pot called a briki.
  • Greek coffee, known also as Turkish or Arab coffee (see section below)
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Espresso coffee cup or Greek coffee cup like the one in the photo
*Note Greek coffee does not have any spices added to it such as cardamom.

What Type of Coffee Should you Use?
Now many people think that if they grind their favorite coffee beans in a fine powder they will have Greek style coffee. This is not the case. I remember when I was the Food and Beverage Director for Starbucks in Greece and we were launching the first store in Greece back in 2002, we had to serve Greek coffee in the store. Apparently there is a law in Greece that requires all coffee shops to serve Greek coffee. However, Starbucks only serve their own coffee blends, so they ground?their beans in a powder and made a ?Greek? coffee. I can assure you that it looked like Greek coffee, but it did not taste like Greek coffee. ? specific combination of beans is used to make this Greek blend, with specific bean varieties, roasted at specific temperatures and used in specific ratios. If there is a place that grinds/roasts Greek/Turkish/Arab style coffee near you, then by all means get the coffee from there. If not, many ethnic super markets sell it and you can also order Greek coffee from Amazon, they carry the 2 popular Greek brands Loumidis and Bravo.

DIRECTIONS
1. Measure out a full coffee cup of water (about 2 1/2 -3 ounces or 75-90 mls) and pour into the briki. If you are making more than one coffee make sure your briki is big enough, you will need space to let the coffee bubble and foam.

2. Add 2 teaspoons of coffee and 2 teaspoons of sugar for every 1 coffee cup and stir. This ratio is considered a somewhat strong coffee.

3. Place the briki on the gas and turn on so that it is on low heat.

4. Very slowly let the coffee heat up, (keep the flame very-very low). Do not leave the coffee unattended.

5. You will slowly see the surface start to tremble (I describe it like a volcano waiting to explode). Once it starts foaming, lift it slightly from the heat until the foam/bubbles settle and then put it on the fire again and let it start foaming and puffing up. Then remove. This step is important to get a good coffee. You don?t want to let it over-boil otherwise it will not have that creamy/foam on top, but you don?t want it under-boiled because then you may taste the grounds in the coffee.

6. Serve in the coffee cup. If you are making more then one, separate the foam in each coffee cup.

7. Serve the cup on a small saucer with a glass of cold water.

Greek coffee has a lighter color then similar style coffees.

Greek coffee has a lighter color then similar style coffees.

How to drink Greek coffee
While this is a small coffee, it is not to be confused with the espresso, which is basically consumed quickly standing up. This coffee is consumed sitting down slowly. To get the full flavor you should sip the coffee slowly. I remember the older generations taking loud sips of coffee; while this may be rude, I find that it increases the enjoyment of the coffee. Once you start tasting the first grounds you are done. Do not try and drink the coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup.

In Greece, traditionally coffee was consumed two times a day: In the morning and in the afternoon after their nap. Although the coffee seems thick and black it is not extremely high in caffeine, it is actually lower then regular filter coffee.

Different Preparations of Greek Coffee
As I mentioned earlier there are different ways to enjoy coffee (some say that there are 45 different ways to prepare Greek coffee), so you may always reduce the sugar or not add any at all. The way I make it is considered somewhat moderate to strong. Here are some of the ways it can be consumed:

  • Plain pronounced Sketos: Only coffee and no sugar
  • Strong pronounced Varis: 2-3 teaspoons of coffee with 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Light pronounced Elafris: ?-1 teaspoon of coffee + 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Sweet pronounced Glykos: 1 teaspoon coffee +2 teaspoons sugar
  • Strong-Sweet pronounced Variglykos: 3 teaspoons coffee +3 teaspoons sugar
  • Yes and No pronounced Ne ke Ohi: 1 teaspoon coffee + ? teaspoon sugar

Drunken Saudi diplomat to be legally prosecuted

'Saudi diplomat to be legally prosecuted'
An Iranian legislator says a drunk Saudi diplomat who recently killed an Iranian citizen in a car accident should receive his due punishment according to the Iranian law.
Spokesman for Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Seyyed Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini said on Thursday that the diplomatic immunity for diplomats does not cover violation of traffic laws, and diplomats will be punished for traffic offenses.

He said diplomatic immunity should not cause diplomats to break the law, noting that the Saudi diplomat is an offender and must face justice through legal channels as he was driving under the influence.

On March 18, a drunk Saudi Embassy staffer killed an Iranian driver and injured a passer-by in a car accident in a northeastern neighborhood in Tehran.

The Saudi staffer rammed his vehicle into the Iranian car before veering off the road. The Iranian driver was killed on the spot.

Four bottles of alcoholic beverage were found in the Saudi Embassy employee?s car. Police were present at the scene and started an investigation into the case.

Iran?s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on March 19 that ?The Foreign Ministry immediately followed the issue through judicial and diplomatic channels after being informed [of the accident] and has taken the necessary measures in this regard.?

Mehmanparast mentioned violating Iranian laws, exceeding the speed limit and driver?s intoxication as the causes of the deadly accident, adding that Iran has strongly protested over the Saudi Embassy staffer?s behavior and has notified the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Tehran of its complaint.

What?s cool? JellyCar 3 manages to be both challenging and easygoing, controlled by tilting your device and tasking you with using your car?s jelly-like characteristics to get past obstacles. You?ll need to figure out the physics of your car to best navigate the title?s 50 levels, and each level has a secret exit you can find to squeeze out additional challenge. You?re scored by how fast you complete each level, and you can save replays to re-watch your fastest times or take on ?ghost mode? to race against friends or opponents and try to get the best times on each level.

Who?s it for? If you like physics puzzlers and platformers with a little bit of racing mixed in, check out JellyCar 3.

What?s it like? Get more of a mix of racing and platforming in Trials Extreme 3.

Alien HiveWhat?s it about? Match-3 title Alien Hive adds a degree of strategy to its matching, puzzle gameplay, requiring players to continually make matches that create better items in the hive and raise its value.

What?s cool? Most match-3 games take an arcade approach to the content, driving players to keep going in order to raise their high scores or progress through new, more challenging levels. In Alien Hive, the goal is different -- every time you make a match of certain items from the grid that is your hive, you create something new. Putting together alien eggs creates an alien embryo; putting together three embryos makes a baby alien. Your goal is to continue to upgrade aliens, plants and other objects from your hive in order to evolve new adult aliens, earn money for power-ups, and make your hive stronger and more valuable. You'll have to contend with Alien Hive's energy system, though, which challenges you by limiting your moves around the grid and requring you to refill it by grabbing combos with energy crystals and other items.

Who?s it for? Fans of match-3 games that are a little more involved and strategic than the usual fare will enjoy Alien Hive.

What?s it like? There are some similar mechanics at play in Triple Town and Puzzle Quest 2.

Lawmakers call for more US involvement in Syria

(AP) ? The Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is calling for greater United States involvement in Syria through the creation of safe zone that would allow the U.S. military to train opposition forces attempting to overthrow President Bashar Assad.

Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan said on CBS "Face the Nation" on Sunday that he doesn't want to lure the United States into a "big boots, on-the-ground conflict."

However, Rogers said he believes a greater U.S. presence is necessary to prevent chemical and conventional weapons from falling into the hands of anyone who would like to harm the United States if Assad is forced out.

NASA to restore Apollo engines found on ocean floor

The recovery of the Apollo 11 rocket engines by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is a historic find, say NASA officials, who say the agency plans to restore the engines.

By Nancy Atkinson,?Universe Today / March 22, 2013

The thrust chamber of one of five first stage F-1 rocket engines used to launch one of NASA's mighty Saturn V rocket on a historic Apollo moon mission is seen on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean in this Bezos Expeditions image.

Bezos Expeditions

Last year, Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos announced that he had located some of the Apollo F-1 rocket engines and planned to recover them. He and his Bezos Expedition team were successful in recovering engines that helped power Apollo astronauts to the Moon and have now brought ?a couple of your F-1s home,? Bezos said in a message to NASA. On the Bezos Expedition website, Bezos called the recovery ?an incredible adventure.?

NASA was happy about the recovery as well.

?This is a historic find and I congratulate the team for its determination and perseverance in the recovery of these important artifacts of our first efforts to send humans beyond Earth orbit,? said NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden in a statement. ?We look forward to the restoration of these engines by the Bezos team and applaud Jeff?s desire to make these historic artifacts available for public display.?

There is no indication so far from Bezos of which flight these engines were from. Last year when Bezos made his announcement, he said they had found the engines from Apollo 11, but it may be been difficult to determine exactly which flight the ones found were from. In total, NASA launched 65 F-1 engines, five per flight, on 13 Saturn V boosters between 1967 and 1973. Supposedly there would be serial numbers to make the identification of which flight these engines were from. Bezos indicated on his blog they were still on the ship, so perhaps the identification will come later.

Five F-1 engines were used in the 138-foot-tall S-IC, or first stage, of each Saturn V, which depended on the five-engine cluster for the 7.5 million pounds of thrust needed to lift it from the launch pad. Each of the engines stands 19 feet tall by 12 feet wide and weigh over 18,000 pounds.

Bezos and his team spent three weeks at sea, working almost 3 miles below the surface. ?We found so much,? Bezos wrote. ?We?ve seen an underwater wonderland ? an incredible sculpture garden of twisted F-1 engines that tells the story of a fiery and violent end, one that serves testament to the Apollo program. We photographed many beautiful objects in situ and have now recovered many prime pieces. Each piece we bring on deck conjures for me the thousands of engineers who worked together back then to do what for all time had been thought surely impossible.?
